Aging isn’t the only stressful factor our skin faces each day. Since skin is the outer barrier of the body and routinely encounters everything the environment throws at it, seasonal changes can have a major impact on complexion and overall skin health. Your skin thrives in moderate temperatures, so hot and cold extremes can have a negative effect. During the transition from summer to fall—when it gets colder and there is lower humidity—we might experience fewer acne breakouts, but the skin can become dry and irritated. It’s common for chronic skin conditions like eczema and rosacea to flare up at this time. Your skin is also still recovering from all the exposure to heat and sunlight that happened over the summer. When tans fade, the wrinkles, dryness, and blemishes look more pronounced on paler skin. You may also need to consider making some changes to your skin care regime, including the products you use, at this time. Fortunately, there are various types of cosmetic treatments—including laser skin resurfacing from our Milwaukee, WI-based ReFresh Aesthetic Center—that can prepare our skin for colder weather.
Restore Hydration to Skin
To avoid dryness and irritation, you may need to upgrade your moisturizing routine. Switch to a richer, more potent, long-lasting moisturizer with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid (such as SkinMedica’s HA5), peptides, glycerin, retinol, and niacinamide. Consider also using an oil or serum, as well as a night cream.
Improve Cell Turnover
When fall finally arrives, our pores can become clogged with a layer of dead and dry skin. Exfoliation treatments such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, dermaplaning, and facials give the skin a deep cleaning. Retinols also encourage the production of new, healthy skin, along with accelerating the dead skin cell turnover rate.
Light-Based Treatments
Fall is an ideal time to try out photo facial treatments with Broad Band Light (BBL)/intense pulsed light (IPL). These light treatments target sun damage such as brown spots and redness from broken blood vessels at the same time, for a more youthful-looking and revitalized appearance.
Laser Skin Treatments
Laser skin resurfacing removes damaged top layers of skin to address common forms of summer skin damage such as wrinkles, lines, sunspots, rough or leathery skin, and enlarged oil glands.
